The full proof — six checks

It generalizes to indices it was never tuned on. The exact same rule is positive out-of-sample on the S&P 500 (SPY), the Nasdaq 100 (QQQ) and small caps (IWM) — three separate indices, each held out in time. One ruleset generalizing across markets is a test most curve-fit systems fail instantly.
It's a real calendar effect — not just being long. This is the test that kills most seasonal claims. Held only on the Tuesdays that follow a down Monday, the average day is +22 bps; held on a random day instead, it's +3 bps. Shuffle which days you pick a few thousand times and the specific timing beats random with p < 0.001. If the money were just market drift, any random day would pay the same — it doesn't.
Flip the signal and it loses. Short the same Tuesdays instead of buying them and the edge flips to roughly −21 bps per trade. A real directional effect must lose when you trade it backwards; noise wouldn't care which way you took it.
It clears real costs with a huge cushion. Break-even is around 24 bps per round trip; a one-day ETF hold costs about 1–2 bps. The edge doesn't evaporate the moment you pay the spread — it survives the cost climbing to roughly ten times what you'd actually pay.
Nothing was fit to the recent years. Split the 2004–2026 history 60/40 in time and it's positive on the early years and the untouched recent block alike (SPY: +18.5 → +28.2 bps; it even strengthens). It's positive in 18 of 23 calendar years — a persistent effect, not a lucky window.
On ~1,400 trades, the odds it's noise round to zero. A block-bootstrap Monte-Carlo across all three indices puts the 90% confidence band at +15 to +28 bps per trade — not one resample out of thousands comes back ≤ 0 (t ≈ 5.6). Modest, low-frequency, and about as statistically clean as an honest edge gets.

Why it failed — point by point

Passing out-of-sample wasn't enough. In-sample Sharpe 1.16, true 2024–2026 OOS 0.85. By the usual bar, it's “validated” — which is exactly why OOS alone fools people.
98% of the Sharpe was untradeable. The “bounce” lived in tiny, near-delisting names you can't actually fill. Add an honest $5 price floor and the Sharpe drops to 0.02. Winsorize crazy days: 0.18.
The signal was real; the money wasn't. The prediction exists on paper. It evaporates the moment you can only trade names you can actually buy and sell. That gap is where most “edges” die.
